Freeberg and friends: Hilding Freeberg of Company D, the 712th Tank Battalion, passed away this year. A few years back, he put some of his snapshots from the period 1941-45 in a pair of albums. His widow, Alyce, has agreed to share these albums with the Oral History web site. Hilding was one of a trainload of recruits from the Chicago area who arrived in February of 1941 at Camp Seeley, California, wearing their wool issue uniforms in the 100-plus degree heat, to fill out the ranks of the 11th Cavalry.

Straight from the horse's mouth: Hilding Freeberg and friend.

Looking for trouble: Troopers practice their scouting techniques.

The potato race: Games and exercises such as a potato race on horseback were used to improve the riding skills of the 11th Cavalry recruits.

Last man sitting: One exercise was for a group of cavalry recruits to try and knock one another off their horses.

Horsing around: Hilding Freeberg (front) and friends.
